Our School Garden
The boys and girls enjoyed harvesting their brussel sprouts, potatoes, onions and red cabbage. They then prepared the soil for planting their winter cabbage. Great team work!
Our Wildflower Garden
In school we want to educate pupils of the importance in looking after the environment. We have created a nature corner in the school where we have our bug hotel, we planted native trees and we are now working on our wildflower garden.
Environmental Workshop
Every year a small selection of schools in Co. Offaly are picked to take part in an Environmental workshop . We were one of the ten schools selected this year. Maura Shannon visited our school and did lots of fun and educational activities with the pupils. It was great to see the children so engaged in the activities and learning the importance of caring for our environment.
Our Bug Hotel
Pupils were very excitied to be making their own Bug Hotels in school. We discussed what types of insects we might attract and why these insects are good for biodiversity. Pupils then used their emaginations to think of different things that could be used to fill up the Bug Hotels to attract lots of bugs.
Greenschools Workshop
On Wednesday the 21st of December we had our assessment day for our fourth green flag. The children were assessed in the form of a quiz. Meika from Greenschools Ireland was very impressed with the knowledge the children had about how to care for our environment and she will be recommending that we receive our Green Flag.
Bike Workshop
On Thursday 16th June our Green School co-ordinator came to our school for a bike workshop. It was great. We all learned how to look after our bikes. We learned how to be safe on our bikes and how to control and use our bikes properly.

Road Safety
This year the school has begun working on its 4th Green School Theme, ‘Travel’. On Friday last as part of Walk to School Week we headed off on a 2km walk around our school. It really was a fun and enjoyable walk. We have also become aware of the speed of traffic that passes our school on a daily basis. We had a visit from our local Garda to talk to us about road safety. The Green School Committee came up with the idea of putting wooden cut outs of children near the school in the hope that traffic will see them and slow down. Keep an eye out for ‘our children’ as your passing our school.

Our New Birdfeeder
As the weather is getting colder we erected a new birdfeeder. The feeder will enable us to observe different types of birds and also gives responsibility to students to ensure the birds have plenty of food and water.
Green Schools Workshop
On Tuesday the 1st of December a 'Green Schools Workshop' was held within the school. All pupils got together to discuss ways we can look after the environment. We learned all about road safety and we got all got a high visibility vest to bring home. We also discussed having a 'Bike Day' in Borra when the weather gets better. We finished up the day with a Green Schools committee meeting.
Pupils receive their bird packs
The pupils of St. Kieran's N.S. were very excited to receive their bird feeders. The children also received an extra bag of feed and a leaflet on how to look after birds in your garden.
Raising our 3rd Green Flag
At the end of the previous school year we were delighted to receive the news that St. Kieran’s N.S. would be awarded with our 3rd Green Flag. Our theme was ‘Water’ and all pupils worked very hard throughout the year. Pupils went to workshops, listened to speakers that visited the school and they also thought of many ways to conserve water both at home and in school. A water harvester was also installed on the school grounds. A big thank you to Ms. Mahon who is the Green Schools Co-ordinator and to our Green Schools committee whom put a lot of hard work and dedication into the Green Schools Projects. We raised our Green Flag on Thursday the 10th after our beginning of the year school Mass. Parents and members of the Community attended the event and everyone got to enjoy refreshments afterwards.
Our Water Action Day
Today we had our action day for water. We all came to school dressed in blue. We tried not to use water when it wasn't necessary. The boys and girls in 5th and 6th class carried 4 litres of water for 2km to help understand how difficult it is for children in countries where getting water is not as easy as just turning on a tap. The younger children also carried lighter amounts of water. We made posters, did crosswords and word searches. It was a great day.

Green Schools
The start of Spring is such a great time of the year. With the milder weather and brighter days it draws us more to the outdoors. In St. Kieran's NS we believe that it is important for children to have 'hands on experience' as it is a great way for children to enjoy learning. Last week we planted flowers around the school and also made four wormeries.
Water Workshop
Michelle from Irish Water came out to visit the school on Thursday the 29th of January. She talked to the children about where water comes from and how we can save water in our homes and in our class. The children enjoyed the workshop.
