History of Our School
Broughal school was founded in 1812 by John Fitzsimons for the benefit and education of his tenants and children. This was so that the children would not have to go to the Protestant school in Kilcormac. The school was built of stone and thatch on the land donated by
Mr Fitzsimons of Castlewood. William Walsh, the first teacher, had begun his career as a hedge school master. He taught for 32 years in Broughal school. and retired to Kilcormac where he died in 1873. He was succeeded by his daughter Mrs Egan whose inspector noted that she taught in her bare feet.
Broughall school was built in 1951. There were two classrooms in it and they had stoves for heating. They burned turf in the stoves. The teacher was Ms McGovern and there were 35 pupils in it. There was an open shed outside the school and the pupils ate their lunch there.
